An Open Source New Packet Radio modem by F4HDK

SKU: H10015 Categories: , Tags: ,

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

  • New: Due to the shortage of STM32 and other chips, the price of NUCLEO-L432KC, 23LC1024-I/SN and other parts have increased a lot, so we add $8 to the original price, now it is $91.99.
  • Note for USA : Due to CFR 47 Part 97.3 FCC regulations, for the 70cm amateur radio band (restriction to 100kHz and 56kBaud), only the setting “modulation 20” of NPR-70 seems to be legal in USA. Please always check your local amateur-radio regulation before buying and using NPR70.
Modulation 20: Symbol Rate 50kS/s, bandwidth 100kHz, raw datarate 100kb/s raw, usable datarate 65kb/s.
  • NPR-70 v05 is an upgrade for NPR-70 v04, the v05 adds a spi SRAM chip on board in order to improve the performance while transmitting. For NPR-70 v04 users, F4HDK has designed an add-on board for the upgrade. Tired of the low data rate on the old-styled tradditional packet radio? Here comes the NEW PACKET RADIO by French Ham F4HDK. NPR-70 means new packet radio over 70cm band. The NPR-70 is a open source project posted on HACKADAY.
The modem’s protocol is designed by F4HDK, without any encryption, which meets the regulations by amateur radio laws. Meanwhile, the modem has a built-in radio transceiver with 500mW RF power output, so there is no additional external radio needed for transmitting and receiving radio signals. You may add a RF power amplifier to boost the 500mW. The configuration of the modem could be done from a PC via telnet or USB-serial Terminal, no additional softwares needed.
Now authorized by the original author F4HDK, elekitsorparts.com is proud to produce the NPR-70 modem kit for sale. You can either buy an assembled unit or buy a true kit which needs to be soldered and assembled by yourself.

NOTE1: NPR-70 modem project page: https://hackaday.io/project/16409

NOTE2: The modem can work in “Normal” or “Remotely Manageable” mode. The configuration for these 2 modes is done via the solder joints on STM32L432KC mcu module. You have to solder the jumper SB9(short) on STM32 module to work in “Remotely Manageable” mode, and dis-solder SB9(Open) to work in “Normal” mode. It is really a tough job to dis-solder these tiny jumpers on the board, so we have done this job for our users. You may solder or dis-solder SB9 again in the future for configuring the modem remotely or normally(locally). A “Remotely Manageable” modem should be permanently connected via USB to a PC,a Raspberry Pi or any other hosts that could be remotely accessed via IP network. If you don’t understand the difference between the 2 proposed configurations, you should select a ‘Normal’ one. For the detailed explanation on these jumpers and the two working modes, please do not forget to check F4HDK’s documents (NPR_modem_assembly_guide and NPR_advanced_guide) on his hackaday project page.

NOTE3: The price here is only for a single modem only. You need at least 2 modems(a pair) for establishing a NPR network. A minimum NPR network consists of one “master” modem and one “client” modem.

NOTE4: Not all of the UHF power amplifiers on the market can work with NPR-70, and only few of them can do that job. We have also listed a known compatible and workable RF amplifier model in our web store, so please see the “Related products” at the bottom of this page. There is a RF amplifier compatibility list on F4HDK’s document, NPR_advanced_guide.

NOTE5: Download the assembly guide here (H10015K_NPR-70_Modem_Kit_Assembly_Guide).
